Zero minutes on the bench

Equal playing time in youth football — even with an odd number of players

Eighteen children is easy. Seventeen, nineteen or twenty-three is where most plans put someone on the bench. Here is how to keep every child playing the same amount, whatever the numbers.

Why equal playing time matters

Children come to play. A child who spends half the morning watching gets fewer touches, less confidence and fewer reasons to come back next week — and parents notice. The FA's Laws of Mini-Soccer put it simply: all team members should receive equal playing time where possible, with at least 50% per player as best practice.

In small-sided festivals you can do better than 50%: with the right plan, every child plays every round.

Three ways to handle odd numbers

MethodHow it worksDownside
Rolling substitutesOne child rests each round, rotatingSomeone is always waiting
Uneven sidesPlay one game 3v4 (or 2v3) and rotate who is outnumberedNeeds careful tracking by hand
Re-mixed teamsNew teams every round, sizes adjusted to fit everyoneHard to plan on paper — easy for software

Uneven sides are the simplest fix that keeps everyone on the pitch, and current U7 3v3 guidance says games like 3v2 are fine. The hard part is fairness over the whole event: who has already played outnumbered, who has played with whom, and does everyone end up with the same minutes?

Examples: how to split the group

PlayersPitchesEach round
1733v3 + 3v3 + 2v3
1933v3 + 3v3 + 3v4
2133v4 + 3v4 + 3v4
2334v4 + 4v4 + 3v4

Talentiada's dynamic mode builds these splits automatically, rotates who plays in the smaller side and re-mixes teams so partners repeat as rarely as possible. A team that wins while outnumbered gets bonus points.

Questions about playing time

Is equal playing time a rule in youth football?

The FA's Laws of Mini-Soccer recommend that all team members receive equal playing time where possible, with at least 50% per player as best practice. This is a recommendation; some county FAs and leagues set their own rules. In U7 3v3 there are no substitutes, so everyone plays the whole game.

How do you split 19 players into small-sided games?

Play three pitches: two 3v3 games and one 3v4. Rotate who plays in the side of three in each round, so nobody is always outnumbered and nobody sits out.

Isn't 3v4 unfair?

Uneven games are explicitly fine in U7 3v3 guidance, and short games plus rotation balance it out. In Talentiada a team that wins while outnumbered gets bonus points, which children tend to love.

Everyone plays. Every round.
